On 13th July, International barbershop Appreciation Day, we celebrated our love of barbershop in style, with around 50 people on the risers! Have a look at the short video with clipd of the 3 songs we sang on the day — If I Can Dream, Seven Bridges Road and I'm Still Standing.

On 8th June, we went to Wellingborough to take part in the North Northamptonshire Music Festival, and what a lovely festival it was! It was great to to see so many barbershop choruses and quartets taking part in the 5 barbershop classes. Congratulations to everyone involved. We won the Mixed Barbershop Class and came second to The Firebirds - barbershop quartet in the Open Barbershop Class. The Firebirds, three of whom also sing with Black Cat Harmony, also won the Barbershop Quartet Class. We're very proud of you, Firebirds! |
We travelled to Harrogate last weekend to take place in the BABS - British Association of Barbershop Singers Annual Convention and were delighted to be awarded first place in Division 2 with 71.3%, our highest ever score! There's a close-up of our certificate here.

G-Whizz Inclusive Tandem Bike Rides was set up by Graham Davies, Black Cat Harmony's Musical Director, in 2021. As a keen cyclist himself, it's a cause he's passionate about. Graham also works tirelessly for Black Cat Harmony, including recently going on a 600 mile round trip to pick up our newly acquired risers (the steps we stand on when we sing), so this event was our way of saying a big "Thank You". We had afternoon and evening performances and raised the magnificent sum of £2,314.83. Many thanks to everyone who took part in this event: Sue Wilson, our MC, Portobello Road Quartet, Footlights Quartet, St Neots Handbell Ringers, Moggerhanger Primary School choir, Riverside Central Quartet, Cool Cats Quartet and others who entertained our appreciative audiences. Updated to add: G-Whizz Inclusive Tandem Bike Rides is Registered Charity Number 1207463. |
Here's some of the lovely feedback we received after our BIG SING! '23. (In case anyone's wondering, we also asked our visitors if there was anything they didn't enjoy about the day. Everyone who responded said "No"! ) |
With our membership growing steadily and now having new (to us) risers, we needed to find an alternative rehearsal venue that could accommodate us and our risers. Luckily Moggerhanger Village Hall was able to accommodate us and we had our first rehearsal there in July 2023. |
On 20th June 2023 Graham Davies, our MD, and a friend, completed a Land's End to John O'Groats cycle ride — 1,016 miles in just 19 days. They didn't take the most direct route. This was an incredible feat — and a clear demonstration of the dynamism, energy and determination Graham brings to our rehearsals! It was a holiday but Graham used it to publicise G-Whizz Inclusive Tandem Bike Rides, an organisation he set up to enable disabled people to continue cycling. Somethin he's passionate about! They recorded a daily blog of their adventures and posted them on the G-Whizz Inclusive Tandem Bike Rides Facebook page.

We were delighted to achieve a score of 69.2% (65.9% last year) so our hard work, under the constant encouragement of Graham Davies, our MD, is paying off! Here's a video of our performance. |
We were delighted to win the A Capella class at The Bedfordshire Festival of Music, Speech and Drama on 4th March 2023! "This group of singers moved and sang as a unit with secure harmony and all the dynamic control needed in this style. Congratulations." |
After winning 'The President's Award' at the North Northamptonshire Music Festival for our online performance of 'Smile' in 2021, we were really pleased to be able to be able to compete in the in-person event this year, achieving 1st place in the Mixed Voices Class and 4th place in the Barbershop Class. Two of our members sing in the Firebirds Quartet, who came 1st in the Barbershop Class and were delighted to be Choir of Choirs Finalists. |
Back to in-person competitions! The Festival of Barbershop in St Neots had to be postponed from the originally planned date in December 2021 to March 2022, It was quite a small event, with only 5 choruses taking part because people were understandably cautious about singing together in any number and some choruses simply didn't feel ready to take part in any sort of competition. It was a wonderful day as it was the first time most of us had sung at any sort of event since early 2020, and made even more wonderful when we were announced as the overall winners, with this comment from Paul Davies, the judge, about our performance of The Way You Look Tonight: This was the Song of the Day. Thank you.

For our second virtual video project, we joined together with Rhapsody Chorus and some wonderful guest singers to learn and record this special version of the Disney classic, When You Wish Upon A Star. We hope you enjoy it! We are also hoping to use the video to raise lots of money for the children's charity of the same name. Covid-19 restrictions have meant we've had no live rehearsals for months. But, undeterred, we have continued to meet via Zoom and have been working hard on a virtual performance of "Smile", for which we were joined by some special guest singers. We had a brilliant time doing this and are now looking forward to our next project! We hope you enjoy watching it.
